René Mosse is one of the pioneers of natural wine in Anjou, Loire, where he and his family have been farming organically since the late 1990s. After years in Paris, René and Agnès returned to their roots, creating an estate now run with their sons, known for vibrant, soulful wines made with minimal intervention and deep respect for terroir.
Before becoming winemakers, they owned a wine bar in Tours where they met a number of esteemed winemakers who gave them the inspiration to start a winery of their own. After studying viticulture and oenology in Amboise under Thierry Puzelat (Clos du Tue Boeuf) and Christian Chaussard (Domaine le Briseau), they bought the estate in St-Lambert in 1999. On their 13 hectare vineyard, 9 are planted with Chenin blanc. 3 with Cabernet franc and Cabernet sauvignon, and the rest is planted with Gamay, Chardonnay, Grolleau Gris and Noir. From the word go they worked the fields organically, using biodynamic preparations to treat the vines and soil. The soils are shallow, with subsoils of schist and sandstone, and varying amounts of clay on the surface.
