Created in 1919 by the Barbieri brothers, Luigi and Silvio, in the liqueur company of their father, Aperol is an Italian bitter apéritif made with gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona, among other ingredients. Its name comes from apero, a French slang word for 'apéritif'.
